Contact your legislator: repeal the Bathroom and Locker Room Law

A year ago the Bathroom-Locker Room Law went into effect and many of the results we predicted have begun. On Christmas Eve of 2016, less than three months after it went into effect, a man entered a women’s room in a TJ Maxx store, and remained there for over a half an hour taking pictures of women. When one woman complained, the store employees delayed taking action for fear of a lawsuit for violating the man’s right to be in the women’s bathroom.

Dozens of similar incidents are listed on the KeepMASafe.org website, supporting the repeal of the law at the ballot box next year. You can find more examples of privacy violations here.

While a referendum to repeal this law is on the ballot for 2018, you can take steps to stop it right now!

Representative Colleen Garry (D – Dracut) and Representative Jim Lyons (R – Andover) have filed bills to get rid of the Bathroom-Locker Room Law. Representative Garry’s bill, HB 2281, would restrict an anatomical boy or man from using the girl’s locker room or women’s room or from participating in girls sports or therapeutic activities. Representative Lyon’s bill, HB 2321, would simply repeal the Bathroom-Locker Room Law in its entirety.

Earlier this year, Global News reported that a women’s shelter kicked out two biological women who complained about a man claiming to be a woman being allowed to stay at the shelter. Incidents involving shelters have happened in Boston and are spreading to other communities.

You can do two things to help:

  1. Please contact your legislators, and ask them to support HB 2281 and HB 2321. Click here to take 30 seconds to email them directly.
  2. Come to the State House in Boston THIS Monday, October 16th, when the Judiciary Committee will be holding a hearing on these bills. The hearing will begin at 1:00 pm in hearing room A-2.

This hearing provides an opportunity to make the case to the legislators and the public that the Bathroom and Locker room law should be repealed. While it’s short notice, we need your help to spread the word today. Thank you!
