Rutgers dorms going co-ed

This fall, students at Rutgers University will be allowed to pick roommates of the opposite sex while living in campus housing. According to press reports, the move is intended to welcome more homosexual students to campus. The school’s decision comes after a gay student committed suicide after his male roommate and a female student streamed video of him engaging in gay sex on the Internet. Incidentally, the student’s suicide could not be directly linked to the privacy issues at Rutgers, but the case has been a rallying point for gay activists.

The program will be open to heterosexual students, who will be given the option to live with their boyfriend or girlfriend, as well as friends of the opposite sex. The pilot program will be for about 100 students by lottery, and first-year students will not have access. Parents will also be unable to overrule a student’s choice.
