Help Stop the the Sex Ed Mandate for MA Schools

WARNING: This post may be unsuitable for some audiences.

Massachusetts State legislators are currently considering a bill to teach twelve year old middle school students about oral and anal sex. I wish I were Get Real_Curriculum_cover_imagemaking it up. But this is real.  In fact, it’s called “Get Real,” Planned Parenthood’s new Sex Ed curriculum for grades 6 through 8.  House Bill 448, entitled “An Act Relative to Healthy Youth,” would require all schools in MA to align their sexual health curricula with the Massachusetts Health Education Frameworks standards (for those of you following the Common Core debate, you know how this works).  If this bill is passed, schools will be scrambling for Sex Ed curricula that is consistent with the Health Frameworks, and it is no surprise that the MA Department of Education and Planned Parenthood are already working together to promote “Get Real,” the new curriculum designed by none other than the Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts.

Here at MFI, we acquired a copy of the “Get Real” student workbooks for grades 6 through 8.  Although they are shot through with offensive material, I brought the following examples of allegedly “age appropriate” and “medically accurate” information to the legislative hearing on June 3rd.  As awkward as it was, I read them aloud to the State Representatives and Senators responsible for the bill’s fate.

On a series of flash cards for 7th graders outlining proper condom usage, one read “Have vaginal, oral or anal sex.”  I asked the legislators if they thought that was “age appropriate” for twelve year old children, and they simply stared back at me uncomfortably.

I then read to them from the “Protection Methods Chart” for 7th graders, which encourages the use of “non-microwavable saran wrap” as a prophylactic for certain non-reproductive sex acts, which I will not repeat in this email (You can read for yourself here).  They similarly had no answer when I asked if they thought that using saran wrap to protect against sexually transmitted infections was “medically accurate.”Friends, there was a lot of support at the hearing to pass this bill.  It almost passed last session, but, as even the bill’s main sponsor admitted in his testimony, we “lit up the switchboard” at the State House in opposition to the Sex Ed Mandate.  It is time to do so again!  In fact, we need to turn up the heat on this bill, because Planned Parenthood is determined to win this year,  so I am asking you to take TWO quick actions TODAY.

  • First, please call the Joint Committee on Education’s legislative office at 617-722-2070 and tell them YOU OPPOSE House Bill 448 – An Act Relative to Healthy Youth.
  • Then, take 90 seconds to email your Representative.  We have pre-written a message for you at our action center, so all you have to do is enter in your name and address and click through.

Together, we can send a clear message to Beacon Hill that we DO NOT want Planned Parenthood poisoning the minds of our young children.
