Episcopalians close to naming married lesbian as bishop

The Episcopal Church was one of the first “mainstream” religions to support the ordination of homosexuals into the ministry. In 2003, V. Gene Robinson was elected the ninth bishop of the Diocese of New Hampshire, becoming “the first openly gay, non-celibate priest” to be ordained as a bishop in a major Christian denomination. His elevation to bishop was one of the factors that led to some churches to break from the Episcopal Church and form the Anglican Church in North America.

Now, with the expected retirement of the head of the New York diocese, the five finalists who are up for election next month include a “married” lesbian. The Rev. Tracey Lind, who is currently the dean of Trinity Cathedral in Cleveland, married Emily Ingralls in 2010 in New Hampshire.
