DeLeo says "Bathroom Bill" should be vetted in committee

We have an update from the State House budget debate on the Bathroom Bill Amendment. State House News is reporting that House Speaker Robert Deleo stated today that policy changes around issues including the Bathroom Bill should be vetted within legislative committees and are not appropriate for the state budget debate this week.

DeLeo repeatedly said lawmakers should refrain from making policy decisions in the state budget process. “I’m very strong on that,” DeLeo said, saying major issues “really have to go through the process.”

We ask that you take two minutes to thank the Speaker and Ways and Means Chairman Charley Murphy for doing the right thing. CLICK HERE to thank them and encourage them to allow the Judiciary Committee ample time to study the bill. It is clear that given the consequences for our schools and public facilities, particularly the news coming from the state of Maine, that thorough study is needed.

National Day of Prayer next Thursday

On Thursday, May 6, people around the nation will be celebrating the 59th annual National Day of Prayer. The purpose of the NDP is personal repentance and prayer, and serves to mobilize the Christian community to intercede for America and its leadership in the seven centers of power: Government, Military, Media, Business, Education, Church and Family. We encourage you to host an event in your own community, or attend a nearby event. There will be an event at the State House in Boston from Noon to 1:00 pm. Find out more at www.nationaldayofprayer.org, or contact Dr. Paul Taylor to help coordinate one in Massachusetts (ptaylor@flameoffire.net or 781.775.9283).

A complimentary tour on the Commonwealth’s Christian heritage as depicted in the State House works of art will take place immediately following the NDOP event.  Dr. Paul Jehle, one of the foremost historians regarding Christianity’s influence on the founding of our nation, will meet all those who wish to participate just outside room 437.

  Middleton businesses oppose adult zone

Middleton officials are asking voters at their Town Meeting to establish a zone limiting adult entertainment in the Town of Middleton, but commercial abutters are now opposing the proposed adult entertainment zone. Last year, residential abutters voiced their dissatisfaction with a similar plan.

Last year the town failed to sell an adult entertainment zone. Town officials have stated in the past that the zone is meant to discourage adult entertainment establishments from moving into town. Until the Town Meeting approves a zone for adult entertainment, the entire stretch of Route 114 is currently available to adult business developers to move in with little control from the town.

Oklahoma Senate overrides veto, implements pro-life laws

Two pro-life bills became law on Tuesday after the Oklahoma Senate voted to override Gov. Brad Henry’s veto. One bill requires that women be given an ultrasound within an hour of their abortion, and that the sonographer must explain the results in detail. The second bill prohibits the “wrongful life” lawsuits that have become increasingly common across the West. In such cases women sue their doctors after their child is born with an abnormality that the mother claims would have led to her to have the child killed through abortion, if she had known about it. The National Right to Life Committee drafted the language of both bills. They had been approved in 2008, but were struck down by a court because they were passed as one bill.

Supreme Court allows embattled cross to stand

The Supreme Court on Wednesday reversed a lower court decision that could have required removal of a cross that has stood in California’s Mojave National Preserve for generations. Although splintered in its reasoning, the court suggested strongly that the cross should remain because Congress has transferred the small plot on which it stands to a private group, addressing constitutional concerns.

“The goal of avoiding governmental endorsement does not require eradication of all religious symbols in the public realm,” wrote Justice Anthony Kennedy. “This cross evokes thousands of small crosses in foreign fields marking the graves of Americans who fell in battles.”

The cross was originally erected on the site in 1934 by members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, to honor American soldiers who died in World War I. The cross has been maintained or rebuilt over the decades by members of the veterans group.

A retired park employee sued, contending that the cross violated the constitutional separation of church and state. The national preserve is public land stretching about 1.6 million acres in southeastern California. After Congress transferred ownership of the land to the veterans group, lower courts found the cross still had to go.
