Truth Project training coming to Worcester May 1

The ground-breaking faith curriculum from Focus on the Family, The Truth Project, has changed thousands of lives across the nation in gaining a Biblical worldview on all aspects of life in the 21st Century. In an effort to spread the program to even more churches and individuals, Focus has created a 1/2-day training seminar to equip people to teach The Truth Project (TTP).

MFI hosted the first Massachusetts training last December when more than 50 pastors and ministry leaders came to Trinity Evangelical Church in North Reading. Next month, on May 1st, MFI is partnering with Focus on the Family and with First Assembly of God to host another training event in Worcester.

Attendees will be trained on the concept of worldview and its significance in life, how to facilitate a TTP small group, and receive a sampling of TTP content. People will also learn about their roles and expectations as a small group leader. The cost is $99 per person (or per married couple) and includes the full 12-lesson DVD collection.

The conference will be held on May 1 at First Assembly of God, 30 Tyler Prentice Road, Worcester. Registration and check-in is at 8:00 a.m., with the Conference starting promptly at 8:30 and running until 12:30 p.m. You can register online HERE or by calling 1-800-A-Family.

  MFI takes on predatory gambling

Massachusetts Family Institute, in concert with the good people at United to Stop Slots in Massachusetts (USS Mass), is upping the ante in the fight against expanded predatory gambling. Last week, House Speaker Robert DeLeo (D-WInthrop) released his 172-page plan to bring slot machines and resort casinos to the Bay State. He also announced that there would be no public hearings on the bill.

MFI, along with our partner organizations, have begun an all-out education campaign directed at the public and the Legislature on why expanded predatory gambling is a bad idea for Massachusetts. We have sent out press releases, and just today released a hard-hitting web ad. You can view the web ad HERE.

Please take a moment right now to call your state representative. Respectfully ask him or her to slow down the process of forever changing the fabric of the state. Explain that once the cat is out of the bag, there will be no putting it back in. The public and experts deserve to be heard on this bill through an independent study.  Call your state representative at 617.722.2000.

Process Update: The Joint Committee on Economic Development and Emerging Technologies voted 12-2 on Monday in favor of the legislation authorizing the two resort casinos and slot machines at the four racetracks. Voting in favor of the bill were  Reps. Dempsey, Scibak, Koczera, Canavan, Nyman, Rice, DiNatale, Brady, Ferrante, Ross, Frost and Sen. Tarr. Sen. Tucker and Rep. Guyer voted no. Sens. Spilka, Petrucelli, Downing, Timilty, Morrissey and Rep. Pignatelli "reserved their rights" and did not vote. The bill will now be reviewed by the House Ways and Means Committee. Amendments are due by Friday, and floor debate is scheduled to begin Tuesday, April 13.

Help us battle on Beacon Hill

The next six weeks will be critical on Beacon Hill. In addition to the fast-tracking of the gambling bill, there will be key committee votes on mandating comprehensive sexuality education in schools and on moving the flawed "bathroom bill" out of committee. MFI will be doing all in its power to defeat these ant-family bills. Please take a moment to easily and securely donate to MFI on our website or CLICK HERE. Thank you for your past support, and for your prayerful consideration today.

Save-the-Date: National Day of Prayer May 6

The 59th National Day of Prayer will be celebrated on May 6, 2010. Based on the understanding that America was birthed in prayer in reverence for the God of the Bible, the National Day of Prayer was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman.

The purpose of the National Day of Prayer is personal repentance and prayer, and mobilization of the Christian community to intercede for America and its leadership in the seven centers of power: Government, Military, Media, Business, Education, Church and Family.

We encourage you to host a National Day of Prayer (NDP) event in your community or attend a nearby event. Go to www.nationaldayofprayer.org  to find an event near you. There will be an event held at the State House in Boston from Noon to 1:00 pm in Room 437. This will be followed by a one and a half hour historical tour of the State House led by Dr. Paul Jehle. You can download a Massachusetts NDP Flyer HERE.

The Massachusetts State Coordinator for the National Day of Prayer is Dr. Paul Taylor. He can be reached at 781-775-9283 or by email at ptaylor@flameoffire.net . Please contact Dr. Taylor if you are hosting an event in your community.

Citizens Against Trafficking protest brothel landlords in Rhode Island

Anti-human trafficking demonstrators gathered in Providence on Easter Sunday to express their dismay over people who rent space to those involved in prostitution, according to a report from Citizens Against Trafficking (CAT). The protestors wanted to put the focus on landlords as "silent partners" with the people who run the brothels. A prostitution law passed in November that criminalizes landlords who rent to known brothels. Family advocates explain that stopping landlords from participating in the practice is an effective way for law enforcement to end the exploitation of women and children.

American College of Pediatricians launches FactsAboutYouth.com

The American College of Pediatricians has created a resource with objective information on sexual orientation and youth to counter the propaganda sent out by activist organizations such as the American Psychological Association. The ACP is a coalition of health professionals, and has launched this project by sending a letter for all 14,800 school district superintendents in the country. The website is www.FactsAboutYouth.com  and features valuable and factual information about sexual orientation and gender confusion for school administrators, teachers, parents and anyone who works with young people.

For example, the project points out the danger to children and youth in encouraging them to self-identify as "gay" or "transgendered" at an early age. Research clearly shows that most children who experience gender confusion will have that confusion resolve itself as they pass through puberty, and the vast majority of young people who experience uncertainty about their sexual orientation will end up identifying as heterosexual in adulthood.

We encourage you to visit www.FactsAboutYouth.com  and consider informing your child's school administrators about the information available on the website.

Group makes push for .XXX domain

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the governing board that controls the Internet, is once again considering establishing a .XXX domain for pornography. This matter has been considered twice before but stopped because of overwhelming opposition in the United States and abroad. A .XXX domain will increase the amount of porn on the Internet and make it more available to adults and children.

Please contact ICANN and tell them to not create the .XXX domain. You can let your comments be known via email: icm-options-report@icann.org . The deadline for submitting comments is May 10th.

Effort to repeal DADT panned by military brass

From FRC Action:

[Last Tuesday] the Army's top officer, Gen. George W. Casey Jr., said that a majority of U.S. soldiers oppose the repeal of the current law against homosexuality in the military. In an interview with Congressional Quarterly, Casey said that based upon opinion polls and personal conversations, he believes that "better than half of the force is probably opposed to the repeal right now..." Given the extreme demands upon the troops engaged in two wars, he said that when he talks with those who would be tasked with implementing this policy change, their response is "kind of in the mode of 'My God, what else do you want us to do right now?'"

Casey's comments come just days after Marine Commandant, Gen. James Conway said the repeal could be costly and a logistical nightmare for the Marine Corps, as new housing would be needed so that Marines would not be forced to bunk with homosexuals. Both Casey's and Conway's comments run counter to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Admiral Mike Mullen, who is working with the Administration to force the military to embrace homosexuality.

Even though Casey and Conway have made measured statements which make clear they oppose the repeal of the present policy, don't look for many active-duty members to speak out, for fear of retribution. While Lt. Gen. Ben Mixon, the Commanding Officer of the US Army Pacific, will not be forced out for speaking out against the policy change, a clear message was sent by Defense Secretary Gates and Chairman Mullen that if you don't agree, you don't speak.
