NH governor vetoes parental notification

At the end of last week, Gov. John Lynch (D-NH) vetoed a bill that would allow parents to know when their underage daughter is considering an abortion. Lynch claimed the bill was unclear and too narrow, even though it was written to conform to federal court decisions on what should and should not be included in such a statute. According to the AP, Kevin Smith of our sister organization in NH, Cornerstone Action, criticized the governor saying, “Despite the language in this year’s version of parental notification having been vetted at the Supreme Court already, Lynch found fictitious nuances in the proposal in an effort to satisfy the radical abortion lobby.” Votes in the House and Senate to override the veto are expected this week.

NH Bishop John McCormack said on Monday that NH requires parental consent on many other matters, including tanning, body piercing, employment, and the possession and use of an asthma inhaler. He asked how it makes sense that a child cannot be given an aspirin by a school nurse without the consent of the parent, but that same child can have an abortion without parental notification.
